The United Auto Workers at Local 3000 have been tireless supporters of the skilled trades in our Downriver schools. Since 2005, they have lent their skills and expertise to educate students about career opportunities that are available to them. These opportunities have included tours of the Ford Flat Rock assembly plant, four-day skilled trades experiences, sitting on advisory committees, along with helping to teach the students in their Mechatronics program located in the Ford Learning Center.
During these many engaging opportunities, UAW members exemplified the best in education by helping students learn and understand what the skilled trades can offer them as a career pathway. It was during all of the opportunities to work with students that the UAW came to appreciate the amazing potential of our students and the desire to help support students was identified. Additional conversations about what the focus of the scholarship should be further identified that the scholarship applications would be chosen with the following consideration:
- Current Mechatronics students at the Ford Flat Rock Assembly plant
- Must be focused on the skilled trades
- Must have proven financial need
This scholarship will be given annually to Downriver Career Technical Consortium students who wish to further their education in any of the skilled trades defined by the US Department of Labor apprenticeship list. It can be applied to a post-secondary institution, apprenticeship program, or highly specialized post-secondary trade or technical school.
Applications are available through your high school career technical education instructor, counseling department, or the link below.
